Orchard House Care Home in Wisbech took an innovative approach to fundraising for BBC’s Children in Need, rallying their community for a sponsored bike ride that embraced inclusivity and fun. Over the course of a week, residents, staff, family members, and even local dignitaries came together to cycle an impressive 155.79km—surpassing their initial goal of 150km.
The event was powered by the home’s Motiview Motitech Bike system, an innovative indoor cycling solution that allows users to explore scenic routes from around the world. Participants could virtually tour landmarks like the Colosseum, the Lake District, or even local parks, all from the comfort of Orchard House’s supervised cycling zone.

A Ride for Everyone
Since partnering with Motiview in 2022, Orchard House has incorporated regular exercise sessions into their weekly lifestyle activities. With adjustable resistance levels and options for arm or leg cycling, the bikes are designed to accommodate a variety of abilities, making this fundraising effort accessible to everyone.
Miranda, the home’s Lifestyle Lead and organiser of the event, shared: “We wanted an activity that everyone could feel empowered to join. The Motitech system was the perfect way to bring our community together while supporting an amazing cause.”
The challenge attracted 28 participants, including residents, staff, and visitors. Among the hi
ghlights was a visit from Councillor Sidney Imafidon, Mayor of Wisbech, who contributed to the ride during a busy day of appointments. Resident Wally described the event as “great fun and enjoyable cycling alongside others.”
More Than Just Fundraising
For General Manager Sarah Watson, the event was about more than raising money—it was also a celebration of physical and emotional well-being: “This was a wonderful way to engage everyone in a meaningful activity. Watching staff and residents share stories while cycling and seeing the scenic video feed kept us all motivated. It’s not just about fundraising but also about fostering connections and promoting health.”
Supporting BBC Children in Need
BBC’s Children in Need is a charity close to the hearts of many, and the funds raised by Orchard House will go towards supporting disadvantaged children and young people across the UK.
This innovative bike ride not only brought the community together but also highlighted the potential of creative activities to inspire engagement and make a difference. Orchard House Care Home looks forward to continuing its efforts to promote well-being and support worthy causes in the future.
