Residents at Romford Care Home are turning the page on a new chapter of community and connection, thanks to a generous donation from
Gidea Park Library.
When the local library announced its closure, they reached out to Romford Care Home to ask if the residents would like to receive a selection of books—and the team didn’t hesitate to say yes. The kind gesture has resulted in three of the home’s lounges now boasting their own dedicated library corners, creating inviting spaces where residents can relax, read and share their favourite titles with one another.
But the story doesn’t stop there. As part of the donation, the home also received two mobile book trolleys. Inspired by this, Lifestyle Lead Amber had a brilliant idea—why not invite residents to take on the role of Library Assistant?
“Sheila and David were the first to volunteer,” said Amber. “They absolutely loved the idea, and just like that, the Romford Care Home Mobile Library was born.”

Each week, Sheila and David carefully stock their trolleys and travel throughout the home, offering books to fellow residents. It’s become a much-anticipated event, bringing joy, conversation, and a renewed sense of purpose to those involved.
David shared, “I feel very important doing this. It’s nice to get to see everyone so happy when we come round.”
Sheila has taken her role very seriously—so much so, she even made a special visit to the General Manager’s office to ensure she had the chance to choose a book, too!
General Manager Maddie praised the initiative: “This has been such a heart-warming development in the home. It’s not just about the books—it’s about the social interaction, the sense of responsibility, and the wonderful conversations it sparks. We’re so proud of Sheila, David, and Amber for bringing this idea to life.”
The mobile library round has now become a weekly highlight, giving every resident the opportunity to browse and exchange books at their
leisure. More than just a delivery service, it’s a meaningful way to encourage engagement, independence, and community spirit.
As Amber puts it: “Books have always had the power to bring people together—and here at Romford Care Home, they’re doing just that.”
