At Woodlands Care Centre, they take pride in celebrating the incredible lives of their residents, honouring their histories, and embracing their unique stories. Through our My Life Story initiative, we provide person-centred care that recognises the rich tapestry of experiences that make each resident who they are. Today, we shine a spotlight on Mary Hickson, a treasured member of Woodland Care Centre’s community.
Mary moved into Woodlands Care Centre 11 years ago with her beloved husband, George. Born in 1931, Mary has lived her entire life in Cambridge, where she met and married George, who hailed from Ireland, when she was just 18 years old.
A trailblazer in her own right, Mary started her career at Barclays Bank on Benet’s Street, Cambridge, straight out of school at the age of 16. She worked there until her retirement, proud of the career she built and the pension she earned. As a cashier and in behind-the-scenes roles, Mary was known for her precision, ensuring her tills always balanced at the end of the day.
“There were no uniforms back then,” Mary fondly recalls, “but we had to dress smartly.” With a salary of £50 per week, Mary worked Monday to Friday, with occasional Saturday mornings, finding moments of joy even in stolen cigarette breaks. “I loved smoking so much; I’d sometimes put two in my mouth!” she laughs.
Mary’s job was more than just a role; it was a passion. She loved meeting new people and made many lasting friendships through her work. Her warmth and kindness left an indelible mark on colleagues and customers alike.
Outside of her career, Mary’s heart belonged to her garden and her beloved dogs. She found peace and joy in tending to her plants and caring for her pets, creating a
haven of love and beauty at home.
