Residents at Woodlands Care Home in Cambridge have been benefitting from the uplifting power of music, thanks to fortnightly music therapy sessions led by local therapist and musician Hayley Ogilvie.
With nearly 30 years of experience as a music therapist, including a long career in the NHS, Hayley brings a wealth of skill and compassion to her sessions. Since joining Woodlands in January 2025, she has worked closely with the Lifestyle Team to create engaging, inclusive experiences for residents living with a range of care needs.
Each session is tailored to the atmosphere in the room, combining live piano, singing, dancing, and percussion. Songs are often chosen spontaneously, encouraging residents to suggest pieces that hold personal meaning. This flexible, responsive approach ensures every session is unique—sometimes lively and energetic, other times reflective and moving.
The benefits for residents go beyond the enjoyment of music. The sessions provide opportunities for social connection, memory recall, and emotional expression. Whether it’s the recognition of a favourite song, a smile shared with a neighbour, or a moment of quiet reflection, residents are supported to engage in ways that feel right for them.
Sarah, Lifestyle Lead at Woodlands Care Home, said:
“The music therapy sessions are always such a highlight for the residents. You can see how music lifts the atmosphere in the room, bringing everyone together in a really special way. Residents look forward to Hayley’s visits, and it’s wonderful to see how much joy, energy, and even comfort her sessions bring. They create moments that are both fun and deeply meaningful.”
At Woodlands, the Lifestyle Team works hard to provide a varied programme of activities that enhance wellbeing and support meaningful engagement. Music therapy has become a key part of this, offering residents the chance to share stories, reminisce, and enjoy the simple pleasure of being together through music.
