Unpacking Memories: Woodlands Volunteer Mary Brings Joy and Connection Through Reminiscence
At Woodlands Care Centre in Cambridge, one familiar face continues to bring joy, warmth, and nostalgia to residents month after

month. Mary Prechner, a retired Occupational Therapist with nearly 40 years of experience, volunteers her time to run Reminiscence Classes that have become a much-loved highlight in the home’s monthly calendar.
Since 2016, Mary has arrived at Woodlands once a month—often with arms full of boxes and bags, each containing objects and treasures tied to that session’s theme. From housework and hobbies to leisure time and celebrations, Mary’s Reminiscence Groups are rich in storytelling and shared laughter, encouraging residents—many of w
hom live with dementia—to reflect on their pasts and engage in meaningful conversations.
What makes Mary’s sessions so special isn’t just her professional background, but her extraordinary kindness, dedication, and compassion. Her connection with the residents is built on understanding, empathy, and a deep commitment to improving their wellbeing—entirely as a volunteer.
Sarah, Lifestyle Lead at Woodlands, shared:
“Mary’s sessions are truly magical. The way she engages residents, brings smiles to their faces, and creates those little moments of recognition and joy is remarkable. Her visits are a highlight for so many of us.”
Rubina, the home’s General Manager, added:“We are incredibly grateful to Mary. Her dedication and warmth have such a positive impact on our residents. It’s not just about memory—it’s about connection, belonging, and the simple joy of sharing stories.”

Mary’s sessions are more than just an activity—they’re a reminder that our past shapes who we are, and that the power of a shared memory can brighten even the cloudiest day. Woodlands is proud to have her as part of the home’s extended family.
