Orchard House Care Home’s VE Day Celebration: A Memorable Street Party Event
Orchard House Care Home in Wisbech recently hosted a vibrant VE Day celebration, bringing together residents, staff, and the local
community for a memorable street party-themed event. The day was filled with nostalgia, laughter, and camaraderie, as residents reminisced about the end of World War II and enjoyed a fun-filled afternoon with their loved ones and neighbours.
The whole-home approach to the event saw the lifestyle and maintenance teams work together to transform the care home. Furniture was arranged and decorated with vintage flair, while the atmosphere was brought to life by the sounds of the Purple Angels Choir, who performed classic wartime songs that had everyone tapping their feet and singing along.
Residents were given specially ordered badges to commemorate the occasion, a lasting memento of the 80th VE Day celebration. The head chef and culinary team created a delightful buffet lunch that became a centrepiece of the day, with many residents commenting on how it reminded them of street parties they attended in their youth at the end of the war.
The event also saw a wonderful turnout from the local community, with visits from the Little Owls nursery, the Mayor and Deputy Mayor, local councillors, cadets, college students, veterans from the home’s monthly coffee morning, Tesco’s Community Champion, and many family members and friends. Their presence added to the sense of unity and celebration.
Sarah Watson, Home Manager, shared her thoughts on the event, saying, “It was incredible to see the amount of support we received from our local community for this event. Many of our residents loved singing along to the old songs, and the buffet lunch brought back such fond memories of when they had street parties to celebrate the end of the war. Our staff worked tirelessly to make this day special, and we couldn’t be prouder of what we achieved together.”
Family member Trevor Cousins also praised the event, commenting, “It was a fantastic day with a wonderful atmosphere and great food. The singers were brilliant. Well done to the team!”
Janet Tanfield, Deputy Mayor, attended the celebration and shared, “It was such a joy to see everyone singing and dancing along to the
music. It was a pleasure to help serve the buffet lunch, and it was clear how much everyone was enjoying themselves. It was wonderful to be part of such a heart-warming occasion.”
The VE Day celebration at Orchard House Care Home was truly a day to remember, fostering community spirit, creating cherished memories, and honouring the legacy of those who lived through such significant history.
