Residents and team members at Brentwood Care Centre in Brentwood were bursting with pride this May as one of their own, Harry Bass,
received a special invitation to attend the Victory in Europe (VE) Day celebrations at Westminster Abbey. Harry, a resident of the home’s Olive Grove Suite, marked the momentous occasion alongside his daughter Debbie. A distinguished veteran, Harry served both in the Army and the Navy and later dedicated over 30 years as Chairman of the Royal British Legion in Romford — making him a truly fitting guest for this commemorative event.
Now aged 100, Harry moved into Brentwood Care Centre in September 2024 and continues to inspire everyone around him with his stories, spirit, and strength of character. Reflecting on the event, Harry shared:
“I am honoured and excited to be taking part in the celebrations.”
General Manager Maria, expressed the pride felt by all at the home: “We are incredibly proud of Harry and all that he has achieved in his life — both in service to his country and in his local community. To see him recognised in such a special way at Westminster Abbey was truly moving. It’s an honour to support such remarkable individuals here at Brentwood Care Centre.”
The team at the home continues to ensure that the rich life stories of their residents are celebrated and shared, with Harry’s VE Day visit serving as a poignant reminder of the bravery, service, and legacy of the wartime generation.
