Bringing Memories to Life: RCH Care Homes’ My Life Story Initiative

25 February 2025

At RCH Care Homes, we believe that truly person-centred care begins with understanding the individual. That’s why our My Life Story initiative is at the heart of every resident’s journey when they move into one of our homes.

Through a personalised approach, My Life Story helps us learn about a resident’s past, their likes and dislikes, their interests, and the experiences that have shaped them. This not only supports our teams in creating tailored activities and meaningful engagements, but it also strengthens relationships between residents, their families, and our care teams—ensuring that each person continues to live a life filled with purpose, joy, and familiarity.

Our My Life Story booklets capture key details of a resident’s life, from treasured memories and career achievements to hobbies and family traditions. This information allows our Lifestyle and Care Teams to craft experiences that resonate on a personal level. Whether it’s arranging visits from community groups that align with a resident’s passions, planning outings to places they once loved, or simply playing their favourite music during quiet moments, the initiative helps ensure that every individual feels valued and truly at home.

Miranda Robinson, Lifestyle Lead at Orchard House Care Home, explains how My Life Story enhances engagement: “The booklets are fantastic for getting to know each resident individually. They help us gain knowledge and understanding about their life and interests, which allows us to plan activities that are truly person-centred. Our aim is to ensure that everyone continues to enjoy the things they love, whether that’s through activities in the home, visits from external entertainers, or trips out into the community.”

At Woodlands Care Centre, the My Life Story initiative is more than just a tool for engagement—it’s a way to celebrate a person’s lifelong journey. Sarah Taylor, Lifestyle Lead, shares:
“Every resident has a unique story—a lifetime of memories. We incorporate these into daily life, making activities more meaningful and familiar. If a resident worked as a gardener, we introduce flower arranging or nature walks to bring them joy. Beyond daily engagement, these booklets serve as lasting legacies that families treasure, keeping the stories of their loved ones alive for future generations.”

At RCH Care Homes, we understand that every individual has a rich history worth celebrating. My Life Story is just one of the ways we ensure that our residents continue to live with purpose, dignity, and the warmth of cherished memories.
