At Withens Nursing Home in Kent, love was in the air this Valentine’s Day as residents took a heartfelt trip down memory lane, sharing the beautiful and unique stories of how they met their husbands and wives.
Organised by the home’s Lifestyle Lead, Nadia, the special reminiscence afternoon was part of a week of themed Valentine’s events, designed to celebrate love in all its forms. With the support of their loved ones, residents shared treasured memories of their first loves – and in some cases, their second, third, and even fourth! Wedding photographs were brought out, revealing not only the fashions of the times but also the fascinating stories behind each special day.
One particularly touching discovery was that two residents had been married on the same day, just a few miles apart, both aged 19. Another resident had lovingly hand-stitched her own wedding dress, while another wore a black petticoat as a tribute to her late mother, who had passed away just a month before her wedding.
There were also some amusing insights into wedding traditions of the past. Two residents admitted they had chosen to marry in March for financial reasons – as couples who tied the knot before April paid less tax! Many reflected that they had been “too young” to get married but remarked that “it was just what you did back then.”
And then, of course, there was one gentleman who proudly revealed he had been married four times and wasn’t ruling out a fifth!
Nadia, the event organiser, shared: “It was such a joy to hear our residents share their love stories, some romantic, some humorous, and all deeply personal. Seeing their wedding photos and hearing about their journeys was truly heart=
warming.”
The Valentine’s reminiscence afternoon was a reminder that love is timeless, and every love story—whether decades-long or fleeting—is special in its own way. At Withens Nursing Home, these shared memories created a beautiful sense of connection, laughter, and warmth, making this Valentine’s celebration one to remember.
