Last month’s Dementia Café at Manton Heights Care Centre in Bedford carried extra significance as it coincided with World Alzheimer’s Month – a global campaign to raise awareness and understanding of dementia.
The monthly event, which provides a welcoming and supportive space for families, friends, carers, and residents to connect and share experiences, featured a special guest speaker — Independent Dementia, Learning & Development Consultant, Emma Hewat, and Head of Dementia Strategy for RCH Care Homes.
Emma led an engaging and interactive Q&A session, offering practical insights, reassurance, and thoughtful discussion around the complexities of living with and supporting those affected by dementia. “It was wonderful to spend time with residents, families, and members of the local community who came along to the Dementia Café,” said Emma Hewat. “The questions asked showed real curiosity and compassion, and it was a privilege to see how much understanding and connection events like this can foster.”
Guests enjoyed a relaxing afternoon with freshly made tea and an array of delicious snacks prepared by the home’s talented Head Chef, creating a calm and comforting setting for open conversation.

“This month’s Dementia Café felt especially meaningful. Having Emma with us to answer questions helped everyone feel more confident and supported in their understanding of dementia. It’s about bringing people together in a safe space to share, learn, and know they’re not alone.”
General Manager Vera Moreira added:
“Our Dementia Café is one of the most valued parts of what we do at Manton Heights. It allows us to connect with families and the wider community, offering guidance and empathy in a relaxed, friendly environment. We were thrilled to see so many people attend this special session during World Alzheimer’s Month.”
The Manton Heights Dementia Café takes place on the last Thursday of every month from 2pm to 4pm, welcoming anyone affected by dementia or those wishing to learn more.
The next session will be held on 30th October from 2–4pm, and everyone is warmly invited to join for a friendly chat, helpful advice, and a cup of tea shared among friends.
