Moving In: The Ultimate Care Home Packing List

Moving into a care home is a significant life transition, and packing thoughtfully can help make it feel more personal, familiar and comforting. Whether your loved one is moving into residential, dementia, or nursing care, knowing what to bring and what to leave behind can ease the process for everyone involved.

At RCH Care Homes, with welcoming homes across Cambridge, Bedford, Essex, and Kent, we encourage residents to bring items that help them feel at home while making day-to-day living easy and dignified.

Here’s our ultimate care home packing checklist to help you prepare for move-in day.

Everyday Clothing

Pack enough to ensure comfort, ease of dressing, and regular changes. All clothes should be easy to wash and clearly labelled.

  • Trousers/skirts and tops
  • Jumpers and cardigans
  • Nightwear and dressing gown
  • Underwear and socks
  • Comfortable shoes and slippers (with non-slip soles)
  • Coat or waterproof jacket
  • Hats, scarves or seasonal accessories

Tip: Choose clothing that is soft, familiar and easy to manage, especially for those living with dementia or mobility challenges.

Toiletries and Personal Care

We provide daily care support, but many residents appreciate having their favourite brands on hand.

  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Soap/shower gel
  • Shampoo and conditioner
  • Deodorant
  • Moisturiser and lip balm
  • Shaving supplies (if applicable)
  • Brush or comb
  • Perfume/aftershave
  • Nail clippers

Personal Touches and Comfort Items

Making the room feel like home is key to settling in. Bring personal items that reflect routines, memories, and preferences.

  • Family photos in frames
  • Favourite cushion or blanket
  • Ornaments or keepsakes
  • Books, magazines or puzzles
  • TV or radio (if permitted)
  • Small furniture items (discuss with the home beforehand)
  • Clock or calendar
  • Memory box (especially helpful for residents with dementia)

Medication and Health Items

Our team will manage medication going forward, but we’ll need an initial supply and relevant documentation.

  • Current medications in original packaging
  • GP contact information
  • Glasses and case
  • Hearing aids and batteries
  • Walking aids or mobility devices
  • Incontinence products (if used)

Essential Documents (for Admission Day)

  • Photo ID (passport, driving licence)
  • Power of Attorney (if applicable)
  • Medication list
  • Contact details of next of kin
  • Financial details or care funding confirmation
  • Advance care plans or preferences (if available)

What Not to Bring

To keep all residents safe and comfortable, we advise not bringing:

  • Irreplaceable or sentimental valuables
  • Large or sharp objects
  • Fragrances that may irritate others
  • Furniture without prior agreement
