In February there was a truly special occasion at Orchard House Care Centre as the team, residents, family, and friends gathered to celebrate the incredible 104th birthday of Mary Gallagher. Mary, who moved into Orchard House just days after turning 100, has become a much-loved member of the home’s community, bringing warmth, wisdom, and a lifelong love of vanilla ice cream—which she enjoys every single day without fail!
Mary has lived a remarkable life, having served as a police officer in Coventry at a time when female officers were a rare sight on the streets. She is also a devoted mother of three, with a loving family who visit her regularly. Her milestone birthday was filled with heartfelt moments, surprises, and plenty of celebrations.
To kick off the festivities, children from Little Owls Nursery 
paid a special visit on Friday, presenting Mary with a handmade card to wish her a happy birthday. On the big day itself, Mary’s family gathered in Orchard House’s cinema room, enjoying delicious homemade refreshments prepared by the hospitality team.
Adding to the special occasion, Wisbech Town Mayor, Councillor Sidney Imafidon, attended the celebration, and Mary was delighted to try on the Mayor’s ceremonial chain. Laughing, she remarked, “It was nice to feel like Mayoress Mary for five minutes!” The Tesco Community Champion, Julie Bushby, also joined in, continuing a wonderful tradition of celebrating Mary’s birthdays with her.
No birthday would be complete without a cake, and Mary’s traditional Victoria sponge was the perfect way to round off the celebrations. Her family expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the Orchard House team for making the day so special, ensuring that every detail was perfect for Mary’s milestone celebration.
