Romford Care Home’s Men’s Grumble & Coffee Club” Proves a Hit

A new weekly gathering at Romford Care Home is bringing conversation, camaraderie, and plenty of humour to the home, thanks to a resident-led idea that has quickly grown into a popular social event.

The “Men’s Grumble & Coffee Club” was first suggested by Bob, the home’s Relative Ambassador, following conversations with residents during the home’s monthly Men’s Shed sessions—part of the UK Men’s Sheds Association initiative.

Through these discussions, it became clear there was a desire for more informal, social opportunities tailored to the gentlemen in the home.

Explaining the inspiration behind the group, Bob shared: “The ladies have a pamper session, with nails and facials. When I chatted with some of the gents, they said they would like to have their own coffee morning.”

What began as a simple get together over coffee and biscuits has since evolved into a lively and informal club where residents can connect, share opinions, and enjoy each other’s company. From playing cards to discussing current affairs and “setting the world to rights,” the sessions offer a relaxed space shaped entirely by those who attend.

The group has also grown beyond the home, welcoming members of the local community as well as individuals from Havering Dementia Carers Groups. Attendance varies each week, but the flexible nature of the club ensures that every session feels personal and engaging.

Whether there are two attendees or ten, the group decides together how to spend their time. Activities can range from conversation and games to a bit of friendly competition. In one recent session, the gentlemen challenged some of the ladies to a volleyball match, only to jokingly “grumble” when they were beaten.

General Manager Maddie praised the initiative and its impact within the home: “This is a fantastic example of how resident led ideas can grow into something really meaningful. The Men’s Grumble & Coffee Club has created a space where friendships can flourish, conversations can flow naturally, and everyone feels included. It’s also been wonderful to see it extend into the local community, welcoming new faces and building connections beyond the home.”

She added: “The relaxed and flexible nature of the group is what makes it so special. It’s shaped by the people who attend each week, ensuring it remains relevant, engaging, and enjoyable for everyone involved.”

With its mix of laughter, conversation, and shared experiences, the Men’s Grumble & Coffee Club continues to go from strength to strength, proving that sometimes the simplest ideas can have the biggest impact.
