Withens Nursing Home Residents Share Their VE Day Memories in Heartwarming Video Tribute

Residents at Withens Nursing Home in Southfleet have taken a touching trip down memory lane, sharing their recollections of the end of the Second World War in a special video project that’s captured hearts both inside and outside the home.

The idea, originally suggested by long-serving Nurse Julie and carer Mark, was brought to life by Lifestyle Lead Nadia, who has worked at the home for three years. Wanting to honour the significance of VE Day and the memories it still holds; Nadia invited residents to reflect on their experiences and share them on camera.

Among those featured, 94-year-old Pam—who has lived at Withens for the past year—stood out for her vivid recollections. Just 14 at the time, Pam recalled the end of the war in remarkable detail, including the exact colour of the dress she wore on VE Day.

“When Pam began talking, it was like stepping into history,” said Nadia, Lifestyle Lead at Withens. “She remembered the joy in the streets, the cheering, and even what she wore that day. Listening to her story was incredibly moving—for staff, residents, and her family.”

The video, once shared on social media, was met with a wave of emotional responses from the wider community. Comments flooded in from friends, former colleagues, and relatives, celebrating the residents’ stories and the home’s thoughtful tribute.

One relative of a current resident, Wendy, commented: “What a lovely lady and fantastic memory – even remembering the colour of her dress!”

General Manager of Withens Nursing Home, Lee, said: “This project perfectly reflects what Withens is all about—honouring our residents’ life stories, creating meaningful moments, and building strong connections between generations. We’re incredibly proud of everyone who helped bring it to life.”

With the success of the video and the joy it brought, the team at Withens is now exploring more ways to record and share the incredible life stories of their residents, ensuring their voices and memories continue to inspire.
